A Local Lesson
By Michelle Pittman and Michael Buck
If you’re just starting to shop at your local farms instead of the supermarket, there might not be any better place to learn about local food than Reeder Farms.
Located at on Richmond Road in Forks Township—just a short drive from downtown Easton—Reeder Farms offers a unique, hands-on farm experience. The farm stand is conveniently located in the garage of owners Russell and Naydene Reeder and surrounded by 117 acres of fertile farm land. Expect to receive special attention. Repeat customers are the norm at Reeders, so new faces are greeted with enthusiasm, knowledge and, if you’re lucky, a guided tour.
The Reeders take a personal approach to farming— the land they grow on used to belong to Russell’s great aunt and he is a sixth-generation farmer. All produce is non-certified organic; pest control measures include marigolds planted at the edges of the crops. Very creative and pretty.
On our visit, Russell walked us down through a field and pulled up some carrots for us, then snapped off a few asparagus spears that we ate on the spot. In short, it was heaven and everything a farm experience should be.
In addition to the bounty of produce that is grown on site, Reeder Farms also offers tree fruits provided by a local orchard (based just a few miles away in New Jersey) that maintains a standard of excellence similar to the farm’s. Reeders also have rare Bourbon Red turkeys, which are in high demand come Thanksgiving, and chickens that produce plenty of eggs.
Reeder Farms is also a great place for the home gardener. Russell and Naydene say they want everyone to experience the joy of growing their own food and have plenty of tips to get you started and keep your crops coming in.
