Five Cool Resolutions for a Better Lehigh Valley
by Carrie Havranek
Everyone resolves to do better for themselves around the New Year. There’s nothing inherently wrong with self-improvement: the idea of renewal has a strong pull and offers us the opportunities to be better versions of ourselves. Let’s take it a step further and try something different this year. Here are five cool resolutions for a better, smarter, more courteous, more cohesive Lehigh Valley.
1. Be nicer while driving. ‘Nuff said.
2. Greet new neighbors with something useful, such as your phone number, a helping hand, a baked good, a hot dinner, or heck, even a copy of latest Little Pocket Guide. My neighbors across the street from me on College Hill did something I’ll never forget when we moved in eight years ago: they brought over a calling card and personally introduced themselves.
3. Get involved. This can mean whatever feels most important to you: the school board, the parent-teacher association, the neighborhood group, your church, synagogue, nonprofits, volunteer work—you name it. When you give of yourself and your time to something that matters you are paid in spades.
4. Patronize local businesses. It’s not only good for the economy, it’s good for the environment and it makes your life a little more unique. It keeps our cities and towns viable, our taxes lower, and our community vibrant and interesting.
5. Smile at complete strangers. One small act of kindness can have a ripple effect on those around you, and your own well-being.
Carrie Havranek doesn’t usually make resolutions at New Year’s but this year will set intentions.
