Laini’s List of 9 Things To Do This Weekend in the Lehigh Valley (aka “Fun Things To Do Before, During, and After the Rapture”)
1. Easton Bicycle Jam 2011
Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm, Riverside Park, Larry Holmes Drive, Easton
Rapture or no rapture, everyone can benefit from riding a bike. Music, bicycling, art and food along the Delaware! Bicycle Education Event for children with certified instructors. Bike mechanic check, helmet fittings and riding skills course FREE helmets for the first 100 children who arrive (available while sizes & supplies last).
2. Certified Copy Opens
Friday at 8 pm, Saturday at 4:30 and 7:30 pm, Sunday at 1:30 and 4:30 pm, Civic Theatre of Allentown, Theatre514, 514 N. 19th Street, Allentown
From Civic’s website: Winner Best Actress Cannes International Film Festival! Juliet Binoche plays a gallery owner living in a Tuscan village who attends a lecture by a British author (opera star William Shimell) on authenticity and fakery in art. Afterward, she invites him on a tour of the countryside, during which he is mistaken for her husband. They keep up the pretense and continue on their afternoon out, discussing love, life and art, and increasingly behaving like a long-married couple. But are they play-acting on a whim, or is there more to their seemingly new relationship than meets the eye? In French with English subtitles.
3. Lucinda in Jam Town, A Cinderella Story
Friday at 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday at 1 and 4 pm, The Charles A. Brown Ice House, 57 River Street, Bethlehem
From Pennsylvania Youth Theatre’s website: Commissioned by PYT for the 25th Anniversary Season, this is a Cinderella like you’ve never seen, jam-packed with a wacky, wondrous mix of dance, physical comedy, spectacular sets, and outrageous costumes. The tale of the girl who rises from the ashes to take her rightful place alongside the prince is deliciously performed in “Panto” style, an enduringly popular form of English theater.
4. Kids’ Farm Day
Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, Easton Farmers’ Market, Centre Square, Easton
Noah would approve of this event. Music, animals & fun! Events include “Sheep to Shawl” demonstration, Northampton County 4-H presentations and animal meeting, learning about the Pig Placement Network (Yes, there will be potbellied pigs there!), and Honeybee Demo, Pony Rides, Giant Strawpile, Kids Crafts and More!
5. South Mountain Hike with Sierra Club Member, Bill Sweeney
Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm, South Mountain Park, Allentown
Because if it’s really gonna all end, being able to “Think Like the Mountain” would be a cool last thing to learn. This is a unique opportunity to get a guided tour of this mountain and learn more about forest health, restoration and management. For more about hiking regardless of the coming end of the world approaching, read Andrew Kleiner’s most recent Remember post.
6. Shave for the Brave Easton 2011
Saturday at Noon, Richard’s Drive-In, 1504 Sullivan Trail, Easton
Because if it’s really the end of the world, who cares if you don’t have hair? Give it up for a good cause. From the Facebook event page: YOU COULD TOTALLY ROCK THIS LOOK!
Every single day, 46 families get the news of a childhood cancer diagnosis. Every single day, 7 sets of parents say their final goodbyes to their children.
In February, we as a community said our goodbyes to ten year-old David Heard. Science did not move fast enough to save David. In David’s memory and in honor of his glowing spirit and bravery, we will come together as a community to raise money and do all that we can to speed science along.
We are looking for people who are willing to make the choice to lose their hair… because they CAN make that choice. Kids going through chemo have no choice at all. Get sponsors and go bald! Each participant has a fundraising webpage for tracking donations and progress toward fundraising goals. An example of a fundraising webpage:http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/kbean
7. Movie in the Meadow – Sea Biscuit
Saturday at 6 pm, Burnside Plantation, Bethlehem
What better way/place to experience the end times than in a beautiful field, surrounded by a loving community, and some majestic horses. Come to the Historic Burnside Plantation for an outdoor screening of the film Sea biscuit. Movies, Games & More is partnering with the Bethlehem Mounted Police Patrol on this event. The Mounted Police Patrol is raising funds for a trailer for Raven, George and Pharoah. The horses are boarded at the Historic Burnside Plantation so come out and meet the team including Officers Tim Brooks, Michael Leaser and Jon Buskirk.
8. Manny Mania & 9th Anniversary BBQ
Manny Mania is Saturday at the Skateplaza, Anniversary BBQ is Sunday at SteelStacks, Both in Bethlehem
Some could argue that this is really two events. But you know what? It may be the end of the world. So I don’t care if it is. They’re going in here together. All I know is that this is another fine way to celebrate. Celebrate the community which has brought the Skateplaza to fruition. Celebrate Homebase Skateshop’s nine years of being in business. Celebrate it all. Oh, and while you’re there, pick up a pamphlet and find out about how you can “Buy a Brick” and help the Skateplaza keep going and growing.
9. LVwithLove “Pub Crawl of Degradation”
Saturday starting at 5 pm at Starfish Brasserie, 51 W. Broad St., Bethlehem
And finally, the ultimate way to spend a last night on the planet. Party like it’s 1999? No. Party like it’s 2011! Also for a good cause.
