A Farmers’ Market Preserved in Photos
Words and Photos by Christopher Elston
The Emmaus Farmers’ Market is at the end of its eighth season with 19 producers, offering a wide variety of seasonal local produce (fruits and vegetables) as well as meats including bison and chicken, goats’ milk cheeses, pastries, pies, breads, flowers, and bedding plants. It’s held in the parking lot of KNBT’s Emmaus office, located at 235 Main Street.
The market is open on Sundays from 10AM until 2PM, rain or shine, from the first Sunday in May until the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving in November. So this weekend is the last Sunday market day until May 2011.
All of their vendors are from Pennsylvania and are, as per their bylaws, located no more than 75 miles from the market. Market rules state that the only items for sale at the market must be grown or made by the person selling them.
Each Sunday shoppers are treated to the sounds of live music. Weekly activities for children are great fun, and there are often cooking demonstrations and other food-related information for the grownups.
Local community groups occasionally set up stands at the market, offering information about local programs and charities, educational opportunities, and fund-raising activities.
