Laini’s List of Nine Things to Do This Weekend in the Lehigh Valley – March 23, 24 & 25

By Laini Abraham

1. Bethlehem Cash Mob

Saturday from 1 to 5 pm, North and South Sides, Bethlehem

From the Bethlehem Cash Mob Day event page: “There will be Cash Mobs going on all over the world, so let’s show them what Bethlehem is made of. On the Southside we’re mobbing MVMNT at 9 E. 3rd St. and General Zapata at 15 E. 4th St. On Main Street we’ll mob Mixed Bag on Main at 450 Main Street and Retro Deli at the Moravian Book Shop, located at 428 Main Street. We ask that you support one or more of these merchants during the event. Why: To support your local merchants in downtown Bethlehem. Spend up to $20 — you can, of course, spend more if you’d like! Remember to tell the merchants “Happy Cash Mob Day” so they know you’re part of the event.”

2. Dan DeChellis Trio CD Release Party

4. absence . presence Part I

Friday from 8 to 10 pm, Soft Machine Gallery, 725 N. 15th St., Ste 7, Allentown

From the event’s Facebook page: This is the first of a two part event surrounding the theme of “absence and presence”. I wanted to organize these events as a result of a feeling of detachment/displacement in society, in our own neighborhoods, at our jobs, on facebook, and even with our best friends and families. I want to talk about feelings that seem prevalent in everyday life, like distrust and skepticism and a need to detach in order to survive. Is it possible to be “genuine”? Is is possible to trust fully? This workshop is an effort to have a dialogue about these issues and perhaps grow positively as a group that night (and have fun too).

5. A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, The Banana Factory, 25 W. Third St., Bethlehem

A groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle and commissioned by V-Day for the first V-Day: UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS festival, which took place June 2006 in New York City.

6. Southside Spring Cleanup

Saturday at 7 am, Campus Square, Bethlehem

Volunteer to help out with this year’s cleanup effort in our Southside Downtown District. Gloves and bags will be provided, as well as snacks. Give back to your community, and do your part to help Bethlehem glitter! Please meet at Campus Square (at New St. and Morton St.), between 8am and noon, to be assigned with a group/section for cleanup. If you have an organization or group that would like to work together on a specific area, please email Loly Reynolds at [email protected]. This will be fun and will make you feel good to work with your fellow neighbor.

7. Breaking Down the Walls — Portraits of Women in Prison

Saturday at 6 pm, Antonio Salemme Gallery, 542 Hamilton St., Allentown

Thirty-six portraits of women painted by Dr. Barnaby Ruhe over two marathon stretches at a local work release facility.
